CARITAS SELF-HELP GROUP LAUNCHES A SELF-REGULATORY FRAMEWORK
Caritas Nairobi, the Social Development Department of the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi, has launched a Self-regulatory Framework as a guiding principle for their Socio-Economic Empowerment Program (SEEP). This launch took place during the 40th anniversary celebration of the Self-help Program at Our Lady of Fatima, Kiriko, Mang’u.
The Socio-Economic Empowerment Program previously known as the Self-help Program was started in 1983 by the late Rev. Fr. Joseph Mukui and Rev. Fr. Michael Mungai who was then- archdiocesan coordinator of the Development Office. They are the pioneers sent by the Servant of God to introduce the program in Kiriko parish, the mother to all 207 groups in the archdiocese of Nairobi.
The promulgation of this self-regulatory framework is a first of its kind in the archdiocese with all the policies, guidelines, manuals, and standards of operations found in it. It is a big leap to bettering services and ensuring transparent and honest services to all.
In his speech, Rev. Fr. Peter Kiarie, Director Caritas Nairobi, acknowledged the growth in the vision seen by the Servant of God, Maurice Michael Cardinal Otunga. ‘A future where people would pool resources together to a bigger pool from which all participants are to benefit.’ He emphasized that the savings in these groups are now serving the greater community.
The ignition of this program was sparked by the encyclical letter “Populorum Progressio” by the late Pope John Paul VI in 1967 on the topic, “development of the people” that the economy of the world should serve mankind and not just a few.
As the group marks 40 years since its inception, this framework is designed to catalyze positive change and foster equitable development within the communities. It is a beacon of hope dedicated to eradicating poverty and nurturing grassroots economic prosperity. It will delve into; Establishing transparent governance, reinforcing compliance and integrity, fostering self-sufficiency and empowerment, and ensuring long-term stability and sustainability.
