THE SIMPLE SERVANT OF GOD WITH AN UNMATCHED LOVE FOR THE PEOPLE
The Archdiocese of Nairobi has today marked 18 years since the Servant of God, Maurice Michael Cardinal Otunga died.
The Eucharistic celebration that took place during the 1pm Mass at the Holy Family Basilica was celebrated by the Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Nairobi, Bishop David Kamau and concelebrated by Fr. Lawrence Njoroge, the Vice Postulator, among others priests.
Cardinal Otunga, is fondly remembered as a simple man who served the people of God in dignity and was consistent in the service of the Church even when experiencing challenges.
“The Servant of God, whatever he did was in the context of the goodness and graciousness of God. When he preached in this Basilica, he held this place to be a holy ground,” Fr. Njoroge recalled.
Sr. Esther Ichugu, the secretary to Cardinal Otunga’s beatification committee explained the process of beatification is currently with the Postulator in Rome waiting to be tabled to the Cardinals and theologians upon which through an anonymous vote, the Servant of God will be declared Venerable.
She called on all Christians to pray for a miracle, donate for the cause and be patient as it takes time.
The servant of God passed on, on 6th September 2003 following a cardiac arrest. He died at the age of 80.
