“EXERCISE CAUTION ON THE ONLINE SPACE” CHRISTIANS IMPLORED ON THE USE OF DIGITAL SPACE; NUNCIO TO KENYA AND SOUTH SUDAN
The Nuncio to Kenya and South Sudan, His Excellency Hubertus Van Megan has implored Christians to use the digital space with responsibility and uphold human dignity to combat misinformation in the online space. This he echoed during the 58th World Day of Social Communications celebrations held at Assumption of Mary parish, Umoja.
“There are many fake stories making rounds in the online space. Think about the speculating rumors and the effect they have on people, destroying their dignity and their lives,” he cautioned.
This annual celebration, saw the gathering of all Catholic media communicators in the archdiocese of Nairobi gather to marvel at the beauty of information for evangelization. The theme of the day; Artificial Intelligence and Wisdom of the Heart; Toward a Fully Human Communication.
His Excellency lauded the efforts made by the media houses and communicators in the dissemination of messages in dignity especially with the challenges posed in the current times where truth is far-fetched with the sensational reporting styles. He encouraged, “We are all called to live out a great vocation, to uphold human dignity in full.”
To the much emphasis placed on AI by the world, a topic that has sparked great conversations more so on the challenges it poses especially on the human brain, he noted, “Computers are getting ever more intelligent, even more human so to say, in the good and the bad, to the positives and the negatives.”
He further urged the Christian faithful to discern truth in their social media interactions stating the implications of misinformation carry more damage to the affected that cannot be taken back.
