ARCHDIOCESE OF NAIROBI CELEBRATES CHRISM MASS
Priests, religious men and women, and the laity from the Archdiocese of Nairobi gathered in large numbers at the Holy Family Minor Basilica for the annual Chrism Mass, a solemn celebration marked by the blessing of Holy Oils and the renewal of priestly vows.
The Mass was led by the Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya, His Excellency Archbishop Hubertus van Megen, and concelebrated by His Grace Archbishop Philip Anyolo, Archbishop Emeritus John Cardinal Njue, Bishops David Kamau, Simon Peter Kamomoe, Rodrigo Mejía, SJ, alongside scores of priests from across the Archdiocese.
In the homily, the Nuncio reflected on the profound gift of the priesthood, describing it as “the soul of all sacraments.” He emphasized the indispensable role of bishops and priests in continuing Christ’s mission in the world today. “Without priests, there is no Church,” he stated, reminding the faithful that Christ is made present through the ministry of ordained clergy.
Archbishop Philip Anyolo, addressing the congregation, extended his heartfelt wishes to all priests on the special occasion. He encouraged them to remain faithful and selfless in their service to God’s people. “Let us continue working for the Christians with love and humility,” he urged.
Chrism Mass, celebrated annually during the Holy Week, brings together priests, religious men and women, and lay faithful from across the Archdiocese. The highlight of the Liturgy is blessing of the Holy Oils used throughout the year in the administration of sacraments such as Baptism, Confirmation, and Anointing of the Sick.
During the same celebration, the Archdiocesan Pastoral Office, led by Fr. James Kinuthia, launched the second edition of the Pastoral Guidelines. These guidelines serve as laws which ensure that evangelization efforts across the Archdiocese are carried out harmoniously, reflecting the spirit of unity within the Family of God.
