Mang’u High School has held its centenary celebrations with Holy Mass presided over by Archbishop Philip Anyolo. The celebration held at the school grounds was graced by the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Mr. Julius Migos Ogamba, scores of Mang’u (Alumni) among them; Mr. George Muhoho- former Director General of the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), Dr. Wilfred Kiboro- Former CEO Nation Media house, KCB Group CEO Paul Russo, MP for Kasarani constituency, Hon. Ronald Karauri and the Board of Management Chairperson, Mang’u High, Mr. Anthony Maina.
Speaking during the centenary celebrations, Archbishop Anyolo echoed Pope Francis’ message that education is an act of hope and urged stakeholders to safeguard holistic learning that shapes both intellect and character.
His Grace who is the local ordinary of Nairobi archdiocese and to that effect, the sponsor of all catholic institutions in the Archdiocese of Nairobi among them Mang’u, raised concerns over the growing number of Grade 10 learners currently at home due to placement challenges and lack of school fees. He appealed for reforms in the placement system to allow parents to seek alternative schools after initial placement, as was previously done during Form One admissions.
He further highlighted disparities in school enrollment, noting that some category four(C4) schools (former sub-county secondary schools) have no learners while others remain overcrowded appealing for urgent stakeholder engagement to ensure equitable distribution of resources and students.
On school fees, he urged the Cabinet Secretary of Education CS Julius Ogamba who was present as the guest of honor, to develop a clear and unified policy, particularly for day schools, warning that inconsistent fee structures were placing unnecessary strain on parents.
He reaffirmed the Church’s commitment, by continuing to support Catholic-sponsored schools which include Mang’u High School, in the Church’s role in nurturing morally upright, intellectually competent, and socially responsible leaders. This he said as he reminded the government on the need to recognize the role of school sponsors as provided under the Basic Education Act of 2013 calling for inclusive consultations as amendments to the Act to be considered.
Mang’u High school was started in 1925 at Kabaa by a Dutch Holy Ghost Missionary Fr. Michael Witte. It has grown into one of Kenya’s leading institutions recording strong academic performance.
