MEMBERS OF THE MISSIONARY YOUTH MOVEMENT ATTEND THEIR ANNUAL MASS IN THOUSANDS
Over 20,000 members of the Missionary Youth Movement (MYM) in the Archdiocese of Nairobi gathered for a vibrant liturgical celebration to mark the Feast of St. Mark. The Eucharistic celebration was presided over by Auxiliary Bishop, Rt. Rev. David Kamau, joined by youth chaplains among them Fr. Victor and Fr. Dominic and scores of priests.
In his homily, Bishop Kamau called on young people to recognize their youthfulness as a precious gift one that Christ invites them to offer in service, purpose, and commitment.
Drawing from the life of St. Mark, his Lordship reflected on the apostle’s early struggles, including moments of fear and withdrawal, noting that despite these weaknesses, Mark later became a dedicated missionary and evangelist. He encouraged the youth not to be discouraged by their shortcomings but to begin anew with courage and determination.
He also cautioned them against the growing desire for quick success without sacrifice, warning that such pursuits can lead to frustration and loss. He specifically highlighted the dangers of gambling and the illusion of easy wealth, urging young people to instead embrace hard work, discipline, and faith as the path to a meaningful life.
“A life without sacrifice lacks meaning,” he said, challenging the youth to make conscious choices that reflect their Christian identity and to become instruments of Christ in their families, schools, and communities.
The celebration also featured the launch of a book on the Servant of God Maurice Michael Cardinal Otunga, authored by Sr. Praxides Nafula, Directress of Paulines Publications Africa. The publication presents Cardinal Otunga as a model of humility, faith, and unwavering service.
In her address, Sr. Nafula described the book as more than a historical account, calling it an invitation for young people to connect with a living witness of holiness who walked and lived in the same paths they are now in Kenya.
During the Mass, new members of the group took an oath, while existing members renewed their commitment to the mission of Christ. The day was marked by dance, shared love, and a celebration of what it means to live out youthful faith in the mission of Christ within the Church
